The Boston Public Library is home to thousands of historical books stored in the 25 branches in the main library.

This massive library has accomplished many "firsts," including

  • free municiple library in the United States
  • lending books to the public
  • setting up a children's room
  • create a branch library
  • BPL sprang up in the center of Boston in 1848, serving nearly 4 million vistors and millions more online per year.

    Supporting their main features of literacy, programs, instruction, and cultural heritage, the Boston Public Library is open to anyone who walks through the grand doors, regardless of race, national orgin, faith, or ecnonmic status.

    There are two main divisions, each offering their own personal classification to fit the public's needs; the Central Library and the 25 branches.

    In the Central Library, which was opened in 1895 and designed by Charles Follen McKim, the essential architect, it establishes a safe place for the classic and historical features that should be perserved in an contemporary hall.

    As for the 25 branches that are scattered in the haphazard grid that is Boston, the contuined renovations on WiFi, computer access, and of course, books, all make for a cozy and warm center for all ages.

    Boston Public Library hold over 23 million items, all ranging from manyscripts and letters to maps and drawings. Many special collections were once part of President John Adam's personal library, which was helpful in the many ways to further the cause of the importance of knowledge to young minds.
